New PHL app helps track typhoons

Users of smartphones and devices running Google's Android operating system can now track cyclones inside the Philippines with a new Philippine-made app. The "iTyphoon" app, created by Nueva Caceres Technology Solutions, has been downloaded more than 300 times since its first version came out September 8. "iTyphoon is a premium application that provides typhoon updates. It has four screens: Details, Map, Reference, and Credits," read the app's description on the Android Market. According to the developer, the Details Screen contains:

  • Icon (intensifying, weakening, steady)
  • Summary (Philippine typhoon name, international typhoon name, current eye location, maximum windspeed, gustiness, area of responsibility, direction and speed, heading towards location)
  • A descriptive behavior of the typhoon
  • Public Storm Signal Warnings issued by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA)
  • Distances with respect to places of interest and popular destinations
  • Weather outlook for the next two to five days But the developer also warned malicious applications can use the app to determine where a user is, and may consume additional battery power. The app, last updated September 14, runs on Android 2.1 and up, and is available as a free 9.7-mb download. On the other hand, the developer said a version for Apple's iOS devices are in the works. "The Apple (iPhone, iPod, iPod Touch) Edition is already done. We'll post announcement here once it's at the App Store for download. :)" it said. — RSJ, GMA News
