'Batangas Hollywood sign' now butt of online humor

One of the country's most famous vistas will wear a brand name, if the Batangas provincial council has its way. Filipinos reacting on Twitter and Facebook seem nearly unanimous in thinking the council's resolution supporting Hollywood-inspired signage bearing the word "Batangas" across Taal Volcano is worth mocking.

Online reactions Aside from drawing criticism from high-profile Twitter users like Jim Paredes and Carlos Celdran, the resolution has also sparked a wave of digitally manipulated photos poking fun at the apparent absurdity of the proposed gargantuan sign. It has even spawned the creation of a Facebook fan page, Hollywood Pilipinas, where people have begun to post and share their own interpretations of the meme. Environmental impact Laudemir Salac, area superintendent of the Taal Volcano Protected Landscape, said that local environment officials still need to assess if the proposal to build the sign will have effects on the area’s flora and fauna. The Taal Volcano is a protected area covered by Republic Act 7586 (National Integrated Protected Areas System Act of 1992), which lists “mutilating, defacing or destroying objects of natural beauty" as one of its prohibited acts. “This plan is still on the drawing board. Wala pang formal proposal. It has to be approved by the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB)," he said in a phone interview. — With Andreo Calonzo/TJD/HS, GMA News
