DOST to give Negros cities OL mosquito traps vs dengue

Some 500 households in two cities in San Carlos and Sagay Cities in Negros Occidental will get 2,000 ovicidal-larvicidal (OL) traps this coming week to help them combat dengue.

 

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) science research specialist Glady Tomulto said the traps are to be distributed Dec. 8 and 9, the Visayan Daily Star reported Saturday.

 

The report quoted DOST's Beth Grecia as saying the Department of Health had particularly identified Rizal village in San Carlos City and Paraiso village in Sagay City as having high numbers of dengue cases.

 

Grecia said each household will receive four OL trap kits and six months' supply of pellets.

 

She said two traps will be placed outside the house and two inside.

 

The OL trap seeks to control the population density of dengue-carrying mosquitoes by stopping their reproduction cycle.

 

Pellets are made from organic pepper and other organic ingredients that contain a scent attracting mosquitoes to lay eggs in the trap.

 

Dengue is considered a year-round threat. Health authorities have appealed to households to keep their suroundings clean and dry to prevent dengue-carrying mosquitoes from breeding. — TJD, GMA News
