Global Green Energy Awards open for nominations

The Ashden Awards, a global environment-friendly awards for sustainable enterprises, is searching for green enterprises from around the world as it continues to increase poor people's access to clean energy.

For 2012, the UK-based award is seeking Southeast Asian pioneers on practical, local energy solutions that improve people's lives while protecting the environment.

"Entry to the awards is free, with up to five winners to receive cash prizes of up to £40,000 (P2.679 million) at a prestigious ceremony in London in June 2013," it said.

Entry for the Awards is free and applications will be accepted until Oct. 23.

It said awards for 2012 include:

Sustainable energy that helps reduce deforestation in tropical forests.
Innovative financial mechanisms for sustainable energy.
Increasing access to sustainable energy.
Sustainable energy in humanitarian aid or reconstruction programs.

The winner will also get benefits such as:

tailored support for helping organizations scale up
a global platform to promote your work
national media exposure
a short film about your work
introductions to policymakers, potential funders and investors.

The 2012 International Award winner from Southeast Asia was the NGO iDE and its for-profit subsidiary Hydrologic Social Enterprise from Cambodia.

"Its energy-saving ceramic water filters mean rural families have safe drinking water without using wood to boil it – so protecting health as well as Cambodia’s precious forests," Ashden said.

Four other international Ashden Award winners this year were: GIZ/INTEGRATION (Afghanistan); IBEKA (Indonesia), SKDRDP (India) and Barefoot Power (Africa). Further information on the 2013 awards can be found at http://www.ashden.org/int_awards.— TJD, GMA News
