Pinay student wins global science video contest


Palo, Leyte resident Hillary Andales won the third annual Breakthrough Junior Challenge after making it to the finals for the second year in a row with her video on reference frames in general relativity.

Andales, 18, will receive $250,000 in educational prizes for besting more than 11,000 students from 178 countries who registered for the contest and 3,200 video submissions to Breakthrough.

Her teacher will also receive $50,000 and her school a new science laboratory worth $100,000 from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

The Philippine Science High School - Eastern Visayas student won the popular vote in 2016 and 2017, allowing her to bypass judging to make it to the finals.

Aside from winning the Breakthrough Junior Challenge, she has been Division Finals Champion every year for the last decade in the Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Math Challenge.

Andales also led the Regional Council of the Philippine Society of Youth Science Clubs, her school paper The Science Net, served as a delegate at the Japan-Asia Youth Exchange Program in Science, and authored a mathematics review book for grade 5 and 6 students. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
