Volcanic material spewed by Mayon so far enough to fill 13k Olympic-sized swimming pools

Mayon Volcano has spewed out 32.6 million cubic meters of volcanic material, enough to fill over 13,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools, according to a report by Saleema Refran on Unang Balita on Thursday.

Ed Laguerta, chief of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology in Bicol, said lava flow from the volcano continues.

Laguerta also warned that pyroclastic flow—a combination of volcanic fragments and gas—on the volcano’s river channels, as shown in drone shots, can flow down nearby communities in the event of heavy rain.

Meanwhile, despite a temporary cancellation of operations at the Legazpi International Airport, Albay tourism jumped up 25 percent in January 2018 from the same period in 2017, due to the volume of tourists flocking to the province to see Mayon Volcano.

Wednesday night’s Super Blue Blood Moon drew sightseers of its own, who brought with them friends and families equipped with cameras and telescopes to watch the rare phenomenon.

Light from the rare lunar spectacle further lit up the cascading of fiery lava from the summit crater of Mayon Volcano, following a day of steam explosions and lava flow.
