A science-oriented filmmaking workshop and competition kicked off last Friday at Cinematheque Centre Manila.

Organized by the Department of Science and Technology's Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), Indie-Siyensya began its third run with a series of workshops, including one on science communication and another on camera work and lighting, as part of a series of activities "meant to arm interested participants with the skills needed to create credible and visually appealing science films."

"We are encouraging students to create more science films. DOST-SEI aims to promote a culture of science in the country and film is no doubt a powerful medium to achieve this," said DOST-SEI Director Dr. Josette Biyo in a news release, which also stated that Indie-Siyensya has partnered with the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) as a means of strengthening its competition.

Indie-Siyensya is now accepting film concepts for short documentaries "that capture science as it works to answer the needs of communities and the country."

The competition is open to all interested students, out-of-school youths, teachers, filmmakers, and science professionals. Any person interested in submitting a film concept to Indie-Siyensya may do so until August 3, 2018.

For approved concepts, the deadline of submission of film entries is on October 15, 2018.
