Scammers exploit Mass Effect 3's controversial ending

Scammers have begun exploiting the controversy over the denoument of Mass Effect 3 by claiming to offer alternative interactive endings.

Computer security firm GFI Labs said at least one such scam surfaced this week, claiming to be a "Mass Effect 3 New Ending Download."

“Last Mass Effect 3 Ending, was really bad, but here, you have NEW, EXCITING ENDING. You only need, to downlad [sic], and run it, downloader will automacitally [sic] start, download, new ending files, you will like it!” GFI quoted the message as saying.

Gamers who ignore the telltale typos and "excessive comma use" will be redirected to Rapidshare to download a zip file, which contains another zip file and a password file.

But as in the past, trying the download mirrors will present the end-user with a survey popup.

"That’s a lot of hoops to jump through just to make affiliate cash for somebody. Fans of 'Mass Effect' desperate to get their hands on a 'better' ending should be wary of anything claiming to be the real deal in the run-up to the Bioware reveal in April," GFI said. — TJD, GMA News
