What if Google went online in the 1980's as a BBS?

What if search giant Google went online in the 1980s, when bulletin board systems (BBSes) were the closest thing to the Internet as we know it today?

 

An Austrian web design firm managed to set up a website that reimagines Google as a text-based BBS, without videos, music or Google's patented Doodles.

 

However, the site (http://www.masswerk.at/googleBBS/), which gives visitors a feel of a Google BBS, does have buttons that can let visitors cite their experience on social networking sites like Twitter and Google+.

 

The web designer, mass:werk.at, described its work as "What Google would have looked like in the 80s."

 

Mass:werk indicated the project was inspired by a video by Squirrel-Monkey.com that explored what it would be like “If Google were invented in the 80s.”

 

It said it used a Google REST API along with JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS to create the Google BBS site.

 

"If you’re ready for a walk down memory lane, or want to show the “kids” what the Internet used to be, head on over and have a play" remarked tech site The Next Web.

 

A separate article on Mashable said the firm managed to draw international attention with its project.
