Dating site eHarmony passwords leaked

In the wake of a security breach of professional networking site LinkedIn, dating site eHarmony has admitted that its passwords have been compromised by hackers.

Dating site eHarmony confirmed that a “small fraction” of its users’ passwords have been compromised and said it has reset the affected members’ log-in information.

“After investigating reports of compromised passwords, we have found that a small fraction of our user base has been affected. We are continuing to investigate… as a precaution, we have reset affected members passwords,” it said on its blog.

It said it has reset affected members' passwords and sent them an email with instructions on how to reset their passwords.

The site also recommended that all members follow security tips such as:

  • Create a strong password of at least 8 characters, composed of lowercase and uppercase letters, numbers and symbols
  • Create different passwords for each of the Internet sites you use
  • Change your passwords every few months

It also voiced regret over any inconvenience the incident has caused.

"Please be assured that eHarmony uses robust security measures, including password hashing and data encryption, to protect our members’ personal information. We also protect our networks with state-of-the-art firewalls, load balancers, SSL and other sophisticated security approaches," it said.

A separate article on tech site Ars Technica said it was possible the same hacker who posted compromised passwords of LinkedIn users posted those of eHarmony users.

"At least 420 of the passwords in the smaller list contain the strings 'eharmony' or 'harmony,'" it added. — TJD, GMA News
