Apple acquires iPad3.com

Apple Inc. has gained control of the ipad3.com, just less than a month after it made a bid for the domain, a tech site reported Wednesday night.

 

The domain is now with Apple’s lawyers at Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton and appeared to be transferred quickly by its previous owner, Fusible.com reported.

 

"It appears the previous name’s owner didn’t even want to wait for an arbitration panel to issue the inevitable decision, and has instead decided to quickly transfer the domain following a complaint that was filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) at the end of June," Fusible.com said.

 

Before the transfer to Apple, people who typed www.ipad3.com into their browsers would find a parked page filled with links instead of the new iPad tablet.

 

However, Fusible.com said the site' Whois record has since been updated to reflect the change in ownership from Global Access to Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton.

 

"Chances are Apple will not change a thing when it comes to marketing 'The new iPad' and will simply forward the name to its iPad page on Apple.com," Fusible.com said.

 

Just a week  

A separate article on The Next Web said the transfer came just a week after Apple lodged a case with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) for the rights to the iPad3.com domain.

 

It added the previous owner, Global Access, registered the site in January 2010. Global Access is located in the Isle of Man and had lost cybersquatting complaints to AOL and Mastercard.

 

iPad-related domain woes just starting

 

On the other hand, DomainNameWire.com reported Apple's woes with iPad-related domains, including iPad.com, may just be starting.

 

It said iPad#.com domains up to at least iPad25.com had already been registered.

 

“Oh, and Apple still doesn’t own iPad.com. But the owner of that domain isn’t cybersquatting, so it would have to pay a pretty penny if it wants the domain,” it added. — TJD, GMA News
