Windows 7 overtakes XP as most popular desktop

Just three years after its launch, Microsoft's Windows 7 has finally overtaken predecessor Windows XP as the most popular desktop operating system, a tech site reported.

Mashable cited data from the August report of Net Applications that Windows 7 grabbed a market share of 42.76 percent, barely beating XP's 42.52 percent.

Windows Vista, the much-criticized OS that succeeded XP and was the predecessor of 7, was third with a 6.15 percent.

"All in all, older versions included, Microsoft controls some 92 percent of the market," Mashable said.

Apple Inc.'s Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) was fourth with 2.45 percent, and Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) was fifth with 2.38 percent.

Windows 7, launched in 2009, is about to be "replaced" by Windows 8, Microsoft's newest OS that is tailored for both desktop PCs and touchscreen-enabled devices like tablets.

Mashable said users running Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 can upgrade to Windows 8 Professional for $39.99 via an online download. — TJD, GMA News
