Hacker claims iPhone 5 jailbreak

Shortly after it hit store shelves, Apple Inc.'s newest smartphone, the iPhone 5, may have already been jailbroken, a tech site reported Saturday (Manila time).

 

A report on tech site The Next Web said iOS developer and hacker Grant Paul tweeted a photo showing the iPhone 5 running the Cydia Store for jailbroken devices.

 

"While iOS 6 has been jailbroken on other devices, this development means hackers have already found and exploited security holes to run custom code on the sixth-generation iPhone, which is the first device to actually ship with iOS 6," it said.

 

Jailbreaking an iOS device allows users to download and install apps not in Apple’s official App Store. However, it also exposes the device to malware.

 

In a tweet, Paul said, "Taller screens like Cydia too. :)" - referring to the iPhone 5's taller screen.

However, The Next Web also said it was possible Paul faked the Cydia icon, likely by renaming a Web app and giving it the appropriate icon).

 

The Next Web also noted Redmond Pie reported that iOS 6 had received a tethered jailbreak for the A4-based iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS, and the 4th-generation iPod touch.

 

However, the tethered jailbreak does not support the iPhone 4S, the iPad 2, the iPad 3, and the fifh-generation iPod touch.

 

It added it was "very surprising" that the A6-based iPhone 5 has already been jailbroken. — TJD, GMA News
