Google may be planning its own wireless network

Is Internet search king Google expanding its reach to the cellular network business?

A report on the Wall Street Journal suggests this possibility, saying Google recently held talks with satellite TV provider Dish Network for a venture to launch a cellular network.

But while the WSJ report said the talks between Google and Dish have not reached the advanced stages, Dish is discussing with “potential partners” a new cell network using its spectrum.

“Google is just one of several companies that Dish has held talks with recently, and the discussions with other potential partners are also at an exploratory stage, said the people familiar with the discussions,” it said.

If the talks between Google and Dish push through, the resulting cellular network may compete directly with carriers like Verizon and AT&T, the WSJ report added.

Google has already cornered a major part of the mobile phone and device market with its Android operating system for smartphones and tablets.

The search giant has also made inroads in mobile-related services, such as maps. — TJD, GMA News
