Cisco probes hackable router security flaw

Cisco has started looking into a reported firmware vulnerability that would allow a hacker to hijack some models of its Linksys wireless routers.

A report on PC World said Cisco confirmed speaking to security vendor DefenseCode, which discovered the flaw and had reported it.

"We do not have enough information to confirm a new vulnerability. We're continuing our own internal assessment," PC World quoted a Cisco spokesman as saying in an email.

Earlier, PC World quoted DefenseCode as saying the flaw lies in the default installation of Linksys routers, many of which are used in home networks.

DefenseCode had warned various Linksys models may have been affected, it added.

PC World cited an earlier Bloomberg report that Cisco in December hired Barclays to find a buyer for Linksys so it can focus on corporate products.

In 2012, Cisco also had to deal with complaints from customers over its decision to have Linksys customers use an Internet-based administration service as the default tool for managing their routers. — TJD, GMA News
