Yahoo Mail still being hacked, says tech site

Hackers may be continuing to defy Yahoo’s efforts to boost security and fix vulnerabilities in its Yahoo Mail service, a tech site reported Thursday (Manila time).

A report on The Next Web said users of Yahoo Mail continue to complain that their mail accounts have been compromised, even after Yahoo claimed it has plugged two security holes.

“Not only are we still getting reports from individual Yahoo users about their accounts getting hacked, but we are seeing spikes in traffic from Google to our previous stories. We believe these clicks represent a rise in users realizing their inboxes have been hijacked after hackers send out a bunch of emails from already compromised accounts,” it said.

“Yahoo is the third largest email provider after Microsoft and Google. Regardless of whether the flaws haven’t been patched properly or if these are new flaws, it’s simply unacceptable for Yahoo Mail users to have their accounts hijacked so easily and for Yahoo to stay passive for so long. The company needs to do more,” it added.

The Next Web said Yahoo Mail users may have seen their accounts compromised as early as last January.

It said the attacks usually involve users getting an email from a friend or colleague or even a completely unknown party containing a link.

The link may lead to the account being hijacked, and sending emails to the victim’s contacts.

The Next Web quoted a Yahoo spokesperson as saying Yahoo “continue(s) to aggressively investigate reports of any email accounts exhibiting anomalous behavior.”

“We’re committed to protecting our users and their data. We strongly urge our users to change their passwords frequently and to use unique, alphanumeric passwords for each online site they visit,” the spokesperson added.  — ELR, GMA News
