iPhone 5S may get improved processor

The iPhone 5S, Apple's rumored upcoming smartphone, may feature a faster processor and a higher-megapixel camera, a Taiwan-based tech site reported.

DigiTimes cited its sources who said the iPhone 5S may "feature a higher-end processor as well as higher-megapixel camera modules."

"The new iPhone will not receive a major upgrade and may just be a slightly enhanced version of iPhone 5 (iPhone 5S), the sources said, citing their latest specification data. Meanwhile, there are also rumors stating that Apple also plans to release an iPhone model using plastic chassis to push its global smartphone market share, the sources added," it said.

It said its sources also noted components for the next-generation iPhone may start shipping at the end of May, and the iPhone 5 may debut in the third quarter.

"The sources pointed out that if the components are all shipped smoothly, manufacturers should be able to deliver the new iPhones to retail channels in one to two weeks for them to be ready to sell in the third quarter," it said.

DigiTimes added related component makers could enjoy around 30 percent sequential growths in the second quarter.

It pointed out Foxconn Electronics chairman Terry Guo earlier said their performance may start picking up after April or May, but "declined to comment about its clients when asked about iPhone orders."

Also, it said Apple is likely to ship 25 to 30 million iPhone 5s in the first quarter, down from 45 million in the fourth quarter of 2012.  — TJD, GMA News
