Dad hacks Donkey Kong to let daughter rescue Mario

Parenting: You're doing it right.

International Women's Day may have come and gone, but this did not stop a father from hacking the classic video game "Donkey Kong" to turn the damsel in distress into the hero of the game.

Upon his three-year-old daughter's request, Mike Mika had hero Mario and damsel-in-distress Pauline switch places, with Pauline beating Donkey Kong to rescue Mario.

"My three-year-old daughter and I play a lot of old games together. Her favorite is 'Donkey Kong.' Two days ago, she asked me if she could play as the girl and save Mario. She's played as Princess Toadstool in Super Mario Bros. 2 and naturally just assumed she could do the same in Donkey Kong. I told her we couldn't in that particular Mario game, she seemed really bummed out by that. So what else am I supposed to do?" Mika said in the description of his YouTube video.

Mika said he hacked the read-only memory (ROM) of the 2010 NES "Donkey Kong" to replace Mario with Pauline.

"I've redrawn Mario's frames and I swapped the palettes in the ROM. I replaced the M at the top with a P for Pauline," he added.

Even better, Mika made the "DK Pauline patch" available for download, though users will need the original ROM and XDELTA to apply it. — TJD, GMA News
