Windows RT tablets get Microsoft Outlook

Good news for users of cheaper, lower-powered tablets powered by Microsoft's Windows RT: you won't get left out of Microsoft's Outlook email and calendar app.

Microsoft's Chris Schneider said Outlook 2013 RT will be part of the Windows 8.1 update being planned for the software giant's flagship operating system.

"We're always listening to our customers and one piece of feedback was that people want the power of Outlook on all their Windows PCs and tablets.  In fact, a Morgan Stanley research study found that 61% of people shopping for tablets consider Microsoft Office to be the single most important software feature," he said.

He added users of a Microsoft Surface or a Windows RT tablet will "have access to the familiar tools in Outlook that help you communicate with others, manage your contacts and appointments, and find information fast."

Schneider said the new Outlook promises a streamlined user experience that "reduces clutter and makes your content king."

"From cool new features like quickly responding to email with inline reply, to using 'peeks' to view your calendar or contacts without having to manually switch between tabs, Outlook brings great new tools to your fingertips.  And with today's news, Outlook will soon be available across Windows PCs, phones and tablets," he said.

Windows RT is a scaled-down version of Windows 8 for lower-powered devices.

Meanwhile, tech site CNET reported Microsoft has announced its Surface tablets will soon get new hotkeys with an update.
"Users can press the function and caps keys at the same time and it will lock the F1 through F12 keys into being function keys. Users will also be able to press function and spacebar to print their screen, the function and delete bar to turn the brightness up, and the function and backspace bar to turn the brightness down, among other new key combinations," it said. — TJD, GMA News
