Kaspersky unveils multi-device security software

With more people owning multiple devices such as laptops, tablets and smartphones, security vendor Kaspersky Lab is coming out with new Internet safety solution.

Kaspersky said its Kaspersky Internet Security - Multi-Device product is an alternative to buying several products to protect a portfolio of smart devices.

"At the launch of Kaspersky Internet Security - Multi-Device, the company will begin a phased global rollout of the Kaspersky Protection Center, an entirely new Web portal to easily view and maintain the security of all protected devices, no matter where they are," Kaspersky said.

It said the Kaspersky Protection Center can be used to activate anti-theft technologies that can recover lost or stolen mobile devices.

The center will have free security tools, such as a password manager to synchronize user login data across all devices, and Kaspersky Social Protect for advanced protection from malware on social sites like Facebook.

"Our customers can purchase one product, install a single license on all their computers and mobile devices, and move on with their day confident that they’ve made the smart decision," said chief marketing officer Alexander Erofeev.

Android tablet, smartphone protection

Kaspersky noted Android smartphones make up 68 percent of the global smartphone market, even as 99 percent of mobile malware it detected is targeting Android devices.

"[T]he number of new mobile malware detected in 2012 – more than 35,000 unique pieces – was six times larger than what was detected in 2011. This pace of malware production is actually increasing, as Kaspersky Lab has detected more than 48,000 unique pieces of Android malware in the first half of 2013," it said.

Kaspersky said its new product for Android includes real-time protection against mobile malware, including automatic scanning of downloaded programs to prevent the installation of rogue applications posing as legitimate ones.

It will also integrate with the Kaspersky Security Network, a global network of real-time threat information that protects users from emerging threats within minutes.

Also, it will have anti-theft features that let users locate missing devices using GPS and cellular signals – or remotely lock devices and wipe data, and use the device’s camera to take images of who possesses the device.

The suite also features a filter for calls and text messages "to block spam and unwanted phone calls."

Protection for macs

Kaspersky's suite also features protection for Apple's Mac OS X, which it said is experiencing a growing share in the global market.

"[As the] share of Mac computers grows, cybercriminals have begun targeting this platform, as well.  In addition to the small but growing malware concern, both Mac and PC users are equally susceptible to phishing scams using forged websites designed to steal personal information," it said.

The product for Macs features an advanced parental control "to ensure children use the Internet safely and responsibly."

It also has an on-screen virtual keyboard to thwart keylogging malware.

Windows protection

For Windows PCs, Kaspersky's suite offers an improved Safe Money proactive protection against financial theft, and new anti-blocker technology to defeat ransomware.

It also offers a new Trusted Applications mode, which automatically blocks programs that are not identified as trusted.

Kaspersky also debuts the ZETA Shield technology, which provides in-depth scans for hidden malicious code.

Other features of the app for Windows include an improved Automatic Exploit Prevention technology and an improved parental control system.

Protection center

Meanwhile, Kaspersky is coming up with its Protection Center to let users view the status of their PCs, Macs, and mobile devices "through an intuitive, centrally managed interface, accessible from any computer using a Web browser." — BM, GMA News
