The Powerpuff Girls return in CGI in January

When Professor Utonium was developing the recipe for creating the perfect little girls, he apparently forgot to add one more ingredient: a heavy amount of CGI.

Cartoon Network is planning to unleash the sweet little super heroines upon the evildoers that plague the city of Townsville once again, in a special new episode to be shown on January 20, 2014. This time, however, the pint-sized trio of Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup will be sporting all-new, full-CG looks to celebrate their 15th anniversary of “saving the world before bedtime.”

A new mobile game will also be released in January 2014, where players can assume the role of their favorite Powerpuff Girl and navigate through various levels, acquiring power-ups and defeating enemies in order to reach the final boss, Mojo Jojo.

A CGI 'R-EVILution'

According to the official press release from Cartoon Network, the new episode will be entitled “Dance Pantsed,” and will featured the cape-wearing chimpanzee, Mojo Jojo, as the main villain. In the one-shot, the evil mastermind abducts a mathematician, an opera singer, and a badger, with the intention of acquiring Chemical X – the accidental addition to the formula that created the Powerpuff Girls – and conquering Townsville.

However, when the Powerpuff Girls foil his plans, he takes revenge on them by forcing them to do his bidding through a nefarious video game of his own invention - ‘Dance Pants R-EVILution.’ It’s up to the Professor to save the day (and his beloved daughters) by revisiting his “dark dancing past.”

A wishing Starr

The special episode also features an equally special guest: none other than the legendary Beatles drummer himself, Ringo Starr. The world-famous musician will be lending his vocal talents to the character Fibonacci Sequins, billed in Cartoon Network’s press release as “Townsville’s most flamboyant mathematician.” Starr will also be featured in an original music video, performing the song “I Wish I Was A Powerpuff Girl.”

Starr joins the original voice cast of Catherine Cavadini as Blossom, Tara Strong as Bubbles, E.G. Daily as Buttercup, Roger L. Jackson as Mojo Jojo, Tom Kane as Professor Utonium, and Tom Kenny as The Mayor.

Produced by Cartoon Network Studios and Passion Pictures, the episode was directed by Dave Smith and art directed by Kevin Dart. Prior to the premiere of the special episode, Cartoon Network will be running a five-hour marathon of classic Powerpuff Girls episodes on January 19. — TJD, GMA News
