Comelec implements online voter registration

Voter registration is now easier because of Comelec’s project to move the process online, according to a report by Balitanghali’s Tina Panganiban-Perez.

Using the system ‘I-rehistro,’ voters can now fill out and submit forms online.

According to Commissioner Luie Guia, the online service is part of Comelec’s goals to make the registration and validation process easier. He added that there is no reason to worry about the security of the information gathered through the online forms.

At the moment, I-rehistro is only available in the National Capital Region, but there are plans to eventually implement it nationwide. For overseas absentee voters, the system will be available in Madrid, Spain.

After online registration, voters will still need to go to the Comelec office assigned for their area where the biometrics data will be gathered. Guia stated that voters without biometrics data will be unable to vote, even if they are registered.

Registered voters without biometric information went down from 9 million to 6 million since online registration was opened. According to Comelec, this is a big enough number to affect election results.  — Bea Montenegro/ELR, GMA News
