'Radioactive' movie to focus on Marie Curie, starring Rosamund Pike

Marie Curie will be the focus of an upcoming film called “Radioactive.”

Born Maria Sklodowska in Warsaw on November 7, 1867, Marie Curie is celebrated for her pioneering work on radioactivity. In 1903, she, her husband, and Henri Becquerel won the Nobel Prize for Physics for their research on spontaneous radiation. This made her the first woman in history to be awarded a Nobel Prize.

Then, in 1911, she won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for her radioactivity research – also making her the only woman to win the Nobel Prize twice. Sadly, her exposure to radiation contributed to her declining health. She died on July 4, 1934.

Playing Marie Cure in the film will be Rosamund Pike, who was nominated for an Oscar for her “Gone Girl” role.

A Working Title production, “Radioactive” is an adaptation of “Radioactive: Marie & Pierre Curie: A Tale of Love and Fallout,” a graphic novel/biography of Marie and Pierre Curie by Lauren Redniss.

The said book makes use of colored drawings with a saturated, dream-like quality. The art is meant to capture the “fairy-tale” of the Curies’ lives – from their love to their enormous scientific contributions to the world.

Marjane Satrapi, the French-Iranian writer and illustrator of the acclaimed “Persepolis” graphic novels, is on board the project as director.

“Marie Curie was such a natural force of life. Everybody, everywhere she went was effected by her energy and brilliance,” stated Satrapi. (http://variety.com/2017/film/festivals/cannes-film-festival-2017-rosamund-pike-marie-curie-1202428403/) “This is an intense role which require a lot of intelligence and sensibility. Rosamund is ‘the one’ to play her. I understood it the second I met her.”

Because of the graphic novel’s colorful imagery, and Satrapi’s own experience as an illustrator and co-director of the animated film adaptation of “Persepolis,” visuals will likely play a substantive role in “Radioactive.”

StudioCanal is financing “Radioactive.” The company’s chairman-CEO Didier Lupfer described the film as a love story that takes place in an era of change, and Curie herself as a brilliant, charming, and amazing woman.

StudioCanal EVP Ron Halpern added: “Rosamund speaks about the subject and character in such an intelligent way and is fascinated by the character and time.” He also said Rosamund is perfect for the role because it requires a strong woman with the capacity to convey the courage, determination, and intelligence of Marie Curie.

“With Marjane they make a powerful duo of women,” he said.

“Radioactive” is still looking for actors to play Marie Curie’s husband Pierre Curie, and the young man Marie Curie falls in love with after his death, Paul Langevin. — TJD, GMA News
