Science that empowers communities featured in winning works at ‘Indie-Siyensya’

The awarding for the 2nd Indie-Siyensya Filmmaking Competition was successfully held this Tuesday at the Aldaba Hall in the University of the Philippines - Diliman campus.

Films that conveyed the theme "A Portrait of a Filipino as a Scientist" were streamed online from November 27 to December 1, with the viewers given the power to vote for their favorite.

"Laho" won the Viewer's Choice special award, which was produced by UP Academic League of Chemical Engineering Students (UP ALCHEMES).

Two works were awarded Best Film, one for the Youth category and another for the Science and Technology Professional category.

Philippine Science High School - Central Luzon Campus students Justin Gabriel Parel, Christopher Aquino, Mart Kiano Bacolod, and Maria Jose Montero impressed the judges with their film about Nicholas Czar Antonio titled “Ilusyon.”

According to a statement released to the press, the film depicts Antonio's decision to do "research on medicinal plants used by an Aeta community" which showed his "dedication to preserve the indigenous group’s traditional medicine practices."

"Paglabud" (When the Waves Swell), meanwhile, was produced by Jericho Aliposa of ThinkConnect.PH from Eastern Visayas and focused on the work of educator and scientist Dr. Margie Dela Cruz.

Dela Cruz is described as an "unsung hero in the aftermath of typhoon Yolanda" who "applied her knowledge of science and the environment in helping communities cope with the effects of a disaster."

The winners each received a cash prize of P100,000.

Filmmaker and UP Professor Nick Deocampo during the awarding said, "Ang siyensya ay nag-uugat sa komunidad." Deocampo is part of the board of judges, along with astrophysicist Dr. Rogel Mari Sese, and UP Professor Dr. Arminda Santiago.
