PAGASA: Tropical cyclone 'Jolina' intensifies into storm

Tropical cyclone Jolina intensified into a tropical storm as it continued to move away from the Philippines before noon Wednesday, even as state weather forecasters are tracking a new potential cyclone.

PAGASA, in its 11 a.m. advisory, said Jolina (international code name Jebi) was estimated at 450 km west of Subic, Zambales as of 10 a.m., packing maximum winds of 65 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph. Jolina is forecast to move northwest at 11 kph.

PAGASA said Jolina is forecasst to be 660 km west of Subic Thursday morning, and outside the Philippine area of responsibility.

The Japan Meteorological Agency's 9 a.m. update indicated Jolina may head for China.

PAGASA said Storm Jolina may bring rainfall of 5 to 15 mm per hour (moderate to heavy) within its 300-km diameter.

It added Jolina will enhance the southwest monsoon, which will bring "moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms" over Mimaropa and Calabarzon.

Meanwhile, PAGASA said it is now tracking a new potential cyclone - a low-pressure area - at 210 km east of Virac, Catanduanes. — RSJ/TJD, GMA News
