PAGASA: Batanes under Signal 2, Nando continues moving northwest

(Updated 11:42 p.m.) Storm Signal Number 2 was hoisted over the Batanes islands Monday night as Tropical Storm Nando (international name Kong-Rey) continued moving northwestwards, state weather forecasters said. PAGASA's 11 p.m. advisory also said the provinces of Cagayan (including Calayan and Babuyan Islands), Apayao and Isabela were under Storm Signal No. 1. The weather service estimated Nando to be 240 km east of Tuguegarao City as of 10 p.m., with maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph. It was moving northwest at 15 kph and is expected to be 120 km east of Basco, Batanes Tuesday evening, and 320 km northeast of Basco, Batanes Wednesday evening. By Thursday evening, it is expected to be 620 km northeast of Basco, Batanes or 190 km northeast of Taiwan. PAGASA said Nando may bring rainfall of 10 to 25 mm per hour (heavy to intenese) within its 400-km diameter. It said Nando is also expected to enhance the southwest monsoon, which may bring "light to moderate with at times heavy rains and thunderstorms over the rest of Luzon." "Sea travel is risky over the eastern seaboard of Central and Southern Luzon," it added. — DVM, GMA News
