PAGASA: Despite warm weather, summer still not here

(Updated 7:46 a.m.) Despite the recent warm weather over Metro Manila and in several parts of the country in past weeks, summer is not quite here yet, state weather forecasters said Tuesday.

PAGASA forecaster Meno Mendoza said they cannot declare the start of the summer season since the northeast monsoon is not fully gone and continues to affect Northern Luzon.

"Maalinsangan pa rin tayo kahit may amihan. Ito sa Central Luzon nakakarating. Sa Metro Manila [umiiral ang] hangin mula sa Pacific," Mendoza said in an interview on dzBB radio.

Metro Manila and other parts of the country can expect generally good weather on Tuesday, except for isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.

Earlier, PAGASA said there is still a chance the northeast monsoon will bring cool weather to parts of the country before the end of February.

Rain over Surigao

Meanwhile, PAGASA said the northeast monsoon is affecting Northern Luzon, even as Surigao in Mindanao will be cloudy with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms.

It added Ilocos, Cordillera, Cagayan Valley and Central Luzon will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rain.

PAGASA said Metro Manila and the rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms.

Also, it said moderate to strong winds from the northeast will prevail over northern and central Luzon and the coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough.

Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the east to northeast with slight to moderate seas, it added.

Gale warning

PAGASA also warned strong to gale-force winds associated with the northeast monsoon may affect the seaboards of Northern Luzon.

"Fishing boats and other small seacraft are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger vessels are alerted against big waves," it said.— DVM/KG, GMA News
