Tropical storm enters PAR, codenamed Henry

(Updated 9:05 a.m.) A tropical storm approaching from the east entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility early Friday morning and has been codenamed Henry.

State weather agency PAGASA said Henry (international codename Matmo) was estimated at 890 km east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar as of 7 a.m., but is not likely to make landfall.

"Si Henry pumasok 6 a.m. Base sa initial track tatawid ito sa Taiwan at Southern Japan. Wala tayong nakikitang scenario mag-landfall ito," PAGASA forecaster Glaiza Escullar said in an interview on dzBB radio.

But she said Henry may enhance the southwest monsoon and cause rain over parts of the country.

She said Metro Manila can expect southwest monsoon rain next week.

PAGASA said Henry has maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph, and is forecast to move north-northwest at 7 kph.

It is expected to be 800 km east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar by Saturday morning and 860 km east of Casiguran, Aurora by Sunday morning.

By Monday morning, it is expected to be at 600 km east of Basco, Batanes.

PAGASA said Henry may bring rain of 7.5 to 15 mm per hour (moderate to heavy) within its 400-km diameter.

Henry's entry occurred a day after Typhoon Glenda (Rammasun) exited the PAR.
