PAGASA, DepEd issue reminders for Typhoon Hagupit

Prepare canned goods, lights, water, mobile phones and radios, and remain vigilant.

These were among the tips given by state weather agency PAGASA to residents in areas that may be hit by approaching Typhoon Hagupit.

In Caraga, Butuan chief meteorological officer Lolita Vinalay reminded residents to be ready for the typhoon.

"Let us be very vigilant. Prepare canned goods, emergency lights, matches, water, gadgets/cellphone, mobile charger, radio, & other equipment. Keep monitoring," state-run Philippine Information Agency quoted her as saying.

An emergency meeting had been held in Butuan City to prepare for Hagupit, which is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Thursday.

Present at Wednesday's emergency meeting were representatives of various government agencies making up the Pre-Disaster Risk Assessment Team.

Earlier, PAGASA said Hagupit may enter the PAR Thursday. Once it does, it will be locally codenamed Ruby.

One of the possible scenarios indicated the typhoon may make landfall over the Eastern Visayas area.

Iloilo

In Iloilo, the Iloilo City government set up a command center at the City Hall penthouse as early as Tuesday.

Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog also called on barangay captains to be alert on warning advisory and safety announcements particularly in coastal areas and riverbanks.

DepEd reminds schools

Meanwhile, the Department of Education issued reminders to school heads to:

  • Unplug computers and other electrical equipment
  • Move textbooks, furniture and important materials to safer areas
  • Secure roof beams with wires or heavy-duty ropes
  • Board up jalousies and windows with plywood or secure material
  • Prune trees especially those adjacent to buildings and along electrical posts
