Icefall in Marikina

Residents of Marikina looked to the skies with surprise late Friday afternoon, April 21, after seeing—and feeling—bits of ice falling from above.

Several people took to social media to report on the sleet, a mixture of rain and small chunks of ice about the size of corn kernels:

The occurrence of sleet is rare but not unusual, even in the Philippine heat.

Ice can form in the sky under the right conditions even in warm weather, if rain falls through a layer of air that's cold enough to freeze some of the raindrops solid.

Sometimes, under the right wind conditions, these ice bits are swept back up into the air where they gain an additional layer of ice. This can happen multiple times, until the ice becomes a large ball of ice or hailstone. — GMA News
