Signal No. 3 up over 11 areas as Ompong passes Laoag


Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 3 was raised over 11 areas as Typhoon Ompong (international name: Mangkhut) passed over Laoag City on Saturday morning.

PAGASA said these areas were under TCWS No. 3 as of 11 a.m.:

  1. Cagayan including Babuyan Group of Islands
  2. Batanes
  3. Ilocos Sur
  4. Ilocos Norte
  5. La Union
  6. Mountain Province
  7. Benguet
  8. Ifugao
  9. Kalinga
  10. Apayao
  11. Abra

Residents of these areas are experiencing winds of 121-170 kph which may last for the next 18 hours.

Waves in the open sea in the above-mentioned areas may reach more than 14 meters tall.

TCWS No. 2, meanwhile, was hoisted over the following areas:

  1. Isabela
  2. Nueva Vizcaya
  3. Pangasinan
  4. Tarlac
  5. Nueva Ecija
  6. Aurora
  7. Zambales
  8. Quirino
  9. Pampanga
  10. Bulacan

Winds of 61-120 kph will be felt in these areas within the next 24 hours. Waves in the open sea may range from 4.1 to 14 meters tall.

Storm surge may reach up to 6 meters in Ilocos Norte, and up to 2 meters in Ilocos Sur, La Union, and Pangasinan.

TCWS No. 1, on the other hand, was raised over the following areas:

  1. Bataan
  2. Rizal
  3. Metro Manila
  4. Cavite
  5. Batangas
  6. Laguna
  7. Lubang Island
  8. Northern Quezon including Polillo Island

These areas will have winds of 30-60 kph within the next 36 hours, and waves in the open sea may reach 1.25 to 4 meters tall.

PAGASA discouraged fisherfolk and those with small seacraft from venturing out over the seaboards where storm signals have been raised, as well as over the seaboards of Luzon, Visayas, and northern and western Mindanao.

As of 10 a.m. Saturday, the center or eye of Ompong was spotted 30 kilometers west of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte.

It had maximum sustained winds of 170 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 260 kph.

Ompong was moving west at 25 kph.

It continued to weaken and was off the coast of Laoag City at 11 a.m.

The typhoon is expected to be 630 km west northwest of Laoag City (outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility) in 24 hours.

Habagat

Meanwhile, in Western Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, ARMM, Mimaropa, and the Bicol region will have gusty winds with occasional moderate to heavy rains due to the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat).

Eastern and Central Visayas, on the other hand, will have scattered light to moderate rains which may become heavy at times due to the Southwest Monsoon. —KG, GMA News
