Paeng intensifies slightly; typhoon effects to be felt by Friday

Typhoon Paeng (international name Trami) intensified slightly Sunday night, but, despite being inside the Philippine Are of Responsibility, was still too far away to directly affect the country, weather service PAGASA reported in an 11 p.m. bulletin.

At 10 p.m., Paeng was 1,185 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, with 150 kilometer per hour sustained winds which could gust up to 185 kph.

Paeng was moving west-northwest at 20 kph, and the typhoon would likely be:

  • 835 kms east of Basco, Batanes by Monday evening,
  • 685 kms east of Basco, Batanes by Tuesday evening,
  • 620 km east of Basco, Batanes by Wednesday evening,
  • 465 km east of Basco, Batanes by Thursday evening, and
  • 180 km north-northeast of Basco, Batanes by Friday evening.

Given these projections, PAGASA expected to raise Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals over extreme northern Luzon by Thursday, at the earliest, with the typhoon making its presence felt over the Batanes and Babuyan Island by Friday. — DVM, GMA News
