Typhoon Paeng maintains strength, may affect extreme Northern Luzon on Friday

Typhoon Paeng (international name: Trami) on Monday remained strong although it has no immediate direct effect yet on the country, PAGASA said.

In its 11 a.m. bulletin, PAGASA said Paeng's effects may be felt in Batanes and the Babuyan Group of Islands in Extreme Northern Luzon on Friday.

Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals over Extreme Northern Luzon may be raised by Thursday or Friday.

Gale warnings, meanwhile, may be issued over the seaboards of Northern Luzon and the eastern seaboard of Central Luzon as Paeng approaches.

Paeng will not enhance the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat).

As of 10 a.m., Paeng's eye or center was located 975 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.

Paeng had maximum sustained winds of 170 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 210 kph.

The typhoon was moving west northwest at 20 kph.

PAGASA advised the public and disaster risk reduction and management councils concerned to take the necessary precautions.

The next weather update will be issued at 4 p.m. Monday. —KG, GMA News
