Ex-Sampaguita star Tita Muñoz passes away at 82

Maria Teresa Muñoz - popularly known by her screen name Tita Muñoz - passed away last Saturday, April 11. Tita started her career in radio when she joined DZPI as an announcer in the 50's. She then ventured into modeling before trying her luck in show business. Her first movie was Rosalinda. Though reluctant at first to pursue an acting career, Tita - who confessed having difficulty in speaking fluent Tagalog - moved to the more established Sampaguita Pictures where she portrayed mostly character roles. Because of her aristocratic features Tita was labeled as the Elizabeth Taylor of local cinema. "That embarrassed me no end," she candidly told entertainment columnist Mario Bautista in an interview in 2002. Tita survived a heart attack and a serious bathroom accident, which required her later on to use a cane. The remains of the 82-year-old actress were reportedly cremated on Easter Sunday. A necrological mass is scheduled tonight at the Sampaguita Chapel of the Funeraria Paz at the Manila Memorial Park in Sucat, Parañaque City. Tita never married. She is the aunt of former actors Carlo and Leandro Muñoz. - Philippine Entertainment Portal
