Pia Guanio ties knot with businessman boyfriend

GMA News anchor Pia Guanio and husband, businessman Steve Mago, prepared for their “simple and private" wedding ceremony for over a month. More than a week after the rites, they kept mum about it before finally admitting on Sunday that they got married on Oct. 1. In a phone interview aired live on Sunday on GMA Network’s “Showbiz Central," the entertainment news magazine program that she co-hosts, Pia said the wedding “was solemn…very meaningful, and it was private." She said they had less than 50 guests gathered inside a tent in the garden of the home of her husband’s parents in the Ayala Alabang subdivision in Muntinlupa. They got engaged last May 7 but made that public knowledge four days after.

“Ayaw talaga namin ng any kind of unnecessary distractions of what a really big wedding entails," Pia said. “Kapag intimate ang isang okasyon, damang-dama mo." Typhoon Quiel was passing through Luzon on their wedding day, but there was a break in the downpour that allowed their guests to stream into the venue, she said. “It was meant to be. Tumila ang ulan para makapasok ang guests," Pia said. Pia said the ceremony took about two days to prepare, but “spiritual preparation took a month" under the guidance of Victory Christian Fellowship pastor Paolo Punzalan, son of the late Ms. Helen Vela and Orly Punzalan. “I was the most cooperative bride in the world," she said. A public event soon Guanio said she was nursing a cold and was not well enough to be at the “Showbiz Central" studio on Sunday for her hosting duties there and for the interview. She also said there will be a more public event to be held in the future for those who were not at the ceremony. As for a church wedding, the GMA News anchor said that would have to wait after her husband’s sister gives birth around autumn next year. She said they are planning to have the wedding in Europe. — KBK/ELR, GMA News
