FPJ monument unveiled in Manila, 8 years after death

Eight years after his death, action king and defeated presidential bet Fernando Poe Jr. was feted with a monument along Roxas Boulevard in Manila.

The monument was unveiled Friday at the corner of Roxas Boulevard and Arquiza Street, with widow Susan Roces and daughter Grace Llamanzares attending the affair.

A portion of the boulevard was temporarily closed to traffic while the unveiling was going on, radio dzBB's Cecilia Villarosa reported.

Sen. Francis Escudero, who was spokesman of Poe's then Koalisyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino, tweeted photos of the monument to Poe.

"Ang puso ko ay punong-puno ng kagalakan sa araw na ito... maraming maraming salamat po sa pagpaparangal at pagkilala kay FPJ," he quoted Roces as saying at the brief program.

At the program, musician Bayang Barrios also sang "May Bagong Umaga," Poe's campaign song in the 2004 polls, Escudero said.

Poe died on Dec. 14, 2004, after suffering a stroke. He had been protesting his defeat to then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo at the time. Mrs. Arroyo assumed the presidency following the ouster of President Joseph Estrada in 2001. — RSJ, GMA News
