'Bwakaw' is PHL's official entry for Oscars

Ang Cinemalaya 2012 entry na “Bwakaw” ang magiging official representative ng Pilipinas sa Best Foreign Language Film category ng prestihiyosong Oscars Awards sa susunod na taon, 2013. Ang balitang ito ay kinumpirma ng director general ng Film Academy of the Philippines na si Mr. Leo Martinez, sa pamamagitan ng text message na ipinadala nito sa PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) ngayong araw, September 18. Ito ang eksaktong text message ni Leo sa PEP: “FYI, Bwakaw is our entry to foreign Oscar. FAP selection committee.” Ang Bwakaw, na isinulat at idinirek ni Jun Robles Lana, ay nanalo ng Audience Choice Award sa Directors’ Showcase category ng Cinemalaya ngayong taon. Ang lead actor ng pelikula na si Eddie Garcia naman ang nagwaging Best Actor. Naka-text din ng PEP si Perci Intalan, isa sa executive producers ng pelikula. Masaya rin nitong kinumpirma ang balita: “Yes! Congrats to us!” APT ENTERTAINMENT. Nakapanayam din ng PEP sa telepono si Rams David, assistant vice president for productions ng APT Entertainment, co-producer ng “Bwakaw.” Ayon kay Rams, si Leo ang tumawag kaninang umaga sa CEO and president ng APT Entertainment na si Jojo Oconer upang ihatid ang magandang balita. Si Jojo ang mister ng actress-TV host na si Ciara Sotto. Sabi pa ni Rams, “Siyempre, tuwang-tuwa kaming lahat, pati na ang mga co-producers ng pelikula, sa pagkakapili ng FAP sa Bwakaw upang maging kinatawan ng Pilipinas sa Oscars. Dagdag niya, ang chairman ng APT na si Mr. Antonio “Tony” Tuviera ang higit na tuwang-tuwa sa magandang development na ito ng kanilang pelikula, na incidentally ay nasa second week run nito sa commercial theaters. Dagdag ni Rams, “Bukas [September 18] ay ipa-process na namin ang mga necessary forms na dapat naming ayusin at i-submit sa FAP, pati na ang film transfer na may English subtitles na. Yun kasi ang requirement sa Oscars. “October 1 ang deadline namin ng pag-submit ng requirements.” May English subtitles na ang “Bwakaw” kahit na noong Cinemalaya run nito sa CCP, Trinoma, at Greenbelt 3 noong July. Pero ngayong regular run na commercially ay inalis muna ang English subtitles. THE SHORT LIST. Isa sa mga regulasyon ng FAP upang ma-qualify sa short list ang isang local film na magkaroon ito ng at least seven days continuous run sa regular theaters. Kabilang sa mga pelikulang nakasama sa short list ay ang mga sumusunod: “Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa” by Alvin Yapan, “Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story” by Tikoy Aguiluz, “Segunda Mano” by Joyce Bernal, “A Mother’s Story” by John-D Lazatin, “The Witness” by Muhammad Yusuf, “Captive” by Brillante Mendoza, “Busong” by Aureus Solito, at “Graceland” by Ron Morales. The eight-member selection committee was chaired by National Artist for Film Eddie Romero. The team is composed of actor-director and FAP deputy director-general Robert Arevalo; director and Directors’ Guild of the Philippines, Inc. secretary Jose N. Carreon; director and Philippine Motion Picture Directors’ Association president William Mayo; director and Production Designers Guild of the Philippines president Manny Morfe; United Film Editors Guild of the Philippines president Jess Navarro; director Elwood Perez; and actress-director Gina Alajar. BWAKAW IN TORONTO. Bukod sa magandang balita sa Oscars, patuloy na umiikot sa international film festivals ang “Bwakaw.” Banggit ni Rams, “Kakabalik lang ng Bwakaw team, headed by our director [Jun Lana] and Ferdinand Lapuz [supervising producer], from Toronto International Film Festival.” Ginanap ang Toronto International Film Festival mula September 10 hanggang 15. Ipinalabas din dito ang “Thy Womb” ni Brillante Mendoza at pinagbibidahan ni Nora Aunor. Sa exhibition section ng Toronto filmfest ipinalabas ang “Bwakaw” at pawang magagandang reviews ang inani ng pelikula. Kabilang na rito ang lumabas sa Hollywood Reporter na ang ilang bahagi ay ang sumusunod: “A five-decade veteran of film and television in the Philippines, Eddie Garcia shows both hardened and heartwarming sides in Jun Robles Lana's tender film about old age and loneliness… “A captivating charmer from the Philippines, Jun Robles Lana’s Bwakaw charts the gently humanizing process by which a sour gay curmudgeon opens himself up late in life to experience love and loss. “Elevated by a performance to be treasured from national screen superstar Eddie Garcia, and equally winning work from a cute pooch, the film gracefully blends melodrama, broad and lower-key comedy, and honestly earned sentiment while making poignant observations about old age, emotional solitude, romantic longing and friendship...” Pagkatapos sa Toronto, ayon kay Rams, nakatakda ring ipalabas ang “Bwakaw” sa New York Film Festival ngayong October 2012, in exhibition; pero in competition ito sa Japan International Film Festival at Hawaii Film Festival, also this October. SECOND TIME. May international distributor na ang “Bwakaw.” Ito ay ang Fortissimo, na siyang nagbebenta sa pelikula sa iba’t ibang film festivals sa buong mundo for theatrical release. Ayon kay Rams, ideal din sanang mag-hire ng international publicist and marketing specialist mula abroad, pero may kamahalan ito kaya aniya, “Hopefully, the government can help.” Ikalawang beses na ito ng APT Entertainment na mag-produce ng pelikulang opisyal na naging entry ng ‘Pinas sa Oscars.  Matatandaang ang kanilang iprinodyus na pelikulang “Ded Na Si Lolo” ay naging Philippine entry rin ng Oscars noong 2009. “May experience na ang APT people sa ganito, so more or less ay alam na namin ang mga dapat gawin. “Sana lang ay makakuha kami ng maraming suporta hindi lamang sa mga tao kundi pati na sa government natin,” sabi ni Rams. Ang one-liner storyline ng Bwakaw: “A story of a 75-year-old gay man who has almost given up on life until he forms an unlikely friendship with a stray dog named ‘Bwakaw.’” Bukod sa legendary actor-director na si Eddie Garcia, tampok din sa cast sina Armida Siguion-Reyna, Rez Cortez, Gardo Versoza, Soxie Topacio, Joey Paras, Alan Paule, Luz Valdez, at Beverly Salviejo. Line producer si Tonee Acejo, cinematographer ang award-winning na si Carlo Mendoza, assistant director si Lorna Sanchez, film editor si Lawrence Ang. Production designer ang batikan at awardee ring si Joey Luna, sound by Mark Locsin at Alex Tomboc. Ang official nominees ng 85th Academy Awards ay iaanunsiyo sa January 15, 2013. Samantalang ang awards night naman ay gaganapin sa February 24, 2013, sa Hollywood and Highland Center sa Hollywood. — PEP.ph
