Aspirants Cup: Custodio 3-pointers rally Big Chill past Boracay Rum

Big Chill relied on Jopher Custodio’s outside shooting as the Superchargers defeated Boracay Rum, 85-75, in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup Wednesday at the San Juan gym. Custodio hit 6-of-15 from beyond the arc to finish with a game-high 28 points including the three-point dagger in the 30-second mark that gave the Superchargers an 80-75 lead. Custodio’s three-pointer capped Big Chill’s mighty comeback from 10 points down (70-60) with seven minutes and 39 seconds to play in the fourth period. “I’m so happy with the way we played. The guys didn’t give up,” said Big Chill coach Arsenio Dysangco. “I guess this win secures our spot in the quarters. We’ll see if we could avail the twice-to-beat incentive.” Jessie Collado and Jerry Glorioso added 14 and 13 points each for the Superchargers, who will play winless PC Gilmore on Friday as they aim for one of the two twice-to-beat incentives in the quarterfinals. The top two teams after the end of the elimination round are assured of a semifinals seat with the next four advancing in the quarterfinals. The third-ranked and fourth-ranked teams will have a twice-to-beat edge in the playoffs. With the win, Big Chill ended its two-game slump its last loss a 78-46 defeat against league leading Freego Jeans. The Superchargers had a 40-33 edge at the half but Toto Bandaying’s three-pointers moved the Waves within 64-57 lead in the third period. Maclean Sabellina, who finished with 25 points, led Boracay Rum’s comeback as the Waves enjoyed a 70-60 edge with 7:39 left in the fourth canto. But the Waves scored only two field goals after that scoring splurge. Custodio’s three-point play capped the Superchargers’ comeback with 48.4 seconds left in the game before another triple, a shot from the right corner, secured Big Chill’s win. — JVP, GMA News
