Fil-Am Mat Rosser guard added to Gilas Jones Cup line-up

The Smart Gilas National Team has a new addition to their line-up, Filipino-American guard Matt Rosser, who is slated to join the team when they compete in the 2012 William Jones Cup later this month. Gilas head coach Chot Reyes confirmed through his Twitter account Saturday that the the six-foot-five California-native is already practicing with the team.

"To those asking:#18 w d curly top is Matt Ganuelas Rosser, starting pt guard of Cal-Poly Pomona. Born in d PH.Our new find after KW,JdV,GW [GN],JD," said Reyes last Saturday through his Twitter handle @coachot, referring to Kelly Williams, Joe Devance, Gabe Norwood, and Jared Dillinger, other Fil-Ams currently playing in the PBA. Filipino basketball fans have known about Rosser since 2009, when his name was brought up in a thread on the Interbasket.net forum discussing Filipino basketball players in the United States. In a post by forum user "nardy", Rosser was described as being born in Olongapo City. His college profile adds that his parents are James and Gina Rosser, and that he has two younger siblings named Brandon and Jason. Rosser averaged 14.3 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.8 steals per game in his high school senior year playing for the Temecula Valley Golden Bears. He then committed to Cal Poly Pomona, an NCAA Division II school, for college, where he averaged 7.8 points, 2.8 assists, 2.7 rebounds and one steal per game. Given his size and position, Rosser can be compared with fellow former NCAA player Gabe Norwood. The six-foot-five forward Norwood joined the Gilas training on Monday along with teammate Jeff Chan right after winning their first championship with Rain or Shine. Like Norwood, Rosser may be expected to play point-forward, creating mismatches against smaller guards at the Jones Cup. Rosser's six-foot-seven brother Brandon currently plays basketball for the Temecula Valley High School as well. The swingman will graduate high school next year and is expected to play in the NCAA as well. The Jones Cup is slated for August 18-26 in Taipei. - Renee Fopalan / AMD, GMA News
