Iran whips Gilas in FIBA Asia Cup semis


The Iranian national squad unleashed a 24-13 run in the fourth quarter to overwhelm the Gilas Pilipinas national squad, 77-60, in the semifinals of the FIBA Asia Cup in Tokyo, Japan on Thursday. The two squads were tied at 30-all at the half, before Iran outscored Gilas in the third, 23-17, for a 53-47 lead heading to the final period. The Philippines were shackled in the fourth, with Jared Dillinger scoring Gilas' first basket at the 6:56 mark to bring the lead down to 13, 62-49. A Larry Fonacier three cut the deficit further to 10, before Eslamieh and Jafarbadi scored five straight to bury the Philippines in a 15-point hole with 4:51 to go, 67-51. An Eslamieh three at the 3:32 mark made it an 18-point game for the Iranians, 72-54. The lead went up to as much as 20 twice, before LA Tenorio hit a trey with 14 ticks remaining to settle the final score. The Iranians outscored the Philippines 24-13 in the final period as Gilas settles for a final game for third place against the loser of the Qatar-Japan match happening later in the day. LA Tenorio and Jared Dillinger had 13 each to lead the Philippines, along with a combined six rebounds, and five assists. Naturalized center Marcus Douthit was limited to 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field, and seven boards. Iran on the other hand had five players in double figures, led by Hamed Afagh Eslamieh's 14 markers. Both sides turned the ball over copiously, with the Philippines registering 23 turnovers and Iran 18.
