PBA: Petron/San Miguel Beer shakes up roster, brings aboard Sol Mercado and Rico Maierhofer

On the heels of an abrupt 4-1 semifinals exit at the hands of the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the 2013-14 Philippine Cup, the Petron Blaze Boosters have conducted a series of trades, landing them guard Sol Mercado, and big man Rico Maierhofer, the PBA confirmed, Tuesday.

The moves come  after the franchise, which will re-adopt the San Miguel Beermen monicker starting with the 2014 Commissioner’s Cup, also revamped their coaching staff, with Biboy Ravanes becoming head coach.

The second set of deals involves GlobalPort as well, and the Barako Bull Energy Cola, with the Air21 Express managing to latch on.

The Batang Pier will send forward Leo Najorda back to Barako Bull for point guard Jonas Villanueva, with Villanueva then getting conveyed to Air21 for guard Bonbon Custodio.

Petron finishes off the dealings by shipping big man Jason Deutchman, plus their 2016 and 2017 second round draft picks to Barako Bull, in exchange for Rico Maierhofer.

Petron’s personnel shift comes in the wake of a 4-1 exit in the semifinals to the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. A conference prior, they came to within a game of winning the championship, losing game seven of the 2013 Governors’ Cup to sister squad San Mig Coffee Mixers.  - AMD, GMA News
