PBA: After wearing Chuck Taylors, Asi Taulava wants to bring back short shorts

With NLEX on a three-game losing skid, Asi Taulava wanted to do something different in the hopes of changing the team's fortune.

The 41-year-old veteran went old school on Friday night against Blackwater, coming to play in a pair of Chuck Taylor sneakers.

"You don't need expensive shoes to play in the PBA and that's what I guess they enjoyed more tonight watching the game," said the Fil-Tongan player, who drew cheers from the energetic Ynares Antipolo crowd every time he held the ball.

"To see someone out there running around in something cheap, what 999, 500 pesos, 400 pesos, they can relate to that," he said. "Better than wearing these expensive ten thousand peso shoes."

The Road Warriors center scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against the winless Elite, showing no difficulty at all with Chucks on his feet.

"I guess I was the first guy in a long time to pull off coming in wearing Chuck Taylors in the game," Taulava said. "I'm just so used to running around barefooted so it's fine."

In fact, he already has another pair, which only costs $8, ready for their next game against Rain or Shine on Tuesday. But apparently, Taulava's statement wouldn't end there — he also plans to go retro at the next opportunity.

"I've been asking for my flashback shorts cause I want my uniform really small," he said. "I'll bring back the short shorts, small jerseys, now I have the shoes. It would be perfect."

After NLEX successfully bounced back from their string of losses with their 104-84 beatdown of expansion team Elite, perhaps Taulava's choice of footwear might just rub off his teammates.

"Maybe they wanna start wearing Chuck Taylors too," he said. "Before you know it NLEX is gonna be sponsored by Chuck Taylors. How cool would that be?" — JST, GMA News
