PBA: Dondon Hontiveros reaches elite three-point shooting milestone

Dondon Hontiveros joined the elite club of the best PBA shooters after reaching the career milestone of 1,000 three-pointers in Game Five of the Philippine Cup finals series between Alaska and San Miguel Beer on Friday.

The Cebuano Hotshot made the trey in the 5:32 mark of the first quarter, mere seconds after he was inserted into the game. The league recognized the feat at the start of the second half, and the Alaska fans cheered at the announcement.

"Nakakatuwa," said the 37-year-old shooting guard, who became the fifth player in PBA history to reach the 1,000-mark. "James Yap is right behind me pero he's a main guy and for me to be part of it, sobrang in a way fulfilling."

Hontiveros made two more treys after the milestone, putting his record to 1,002 three-pointers and passing fellow Cebuano Al Solis, who had 1,000 outside shots, for the No. 4 spot in the all-time list.

The Alaska gunner, who reached the mark after 633 games, is currently behind Allan Caidic (1,242), Jimmy Alapag (1,177), and Ronnie Magsanoc (1,171).

"It's an achievement pero as a player you want to give your best to give your team a chance of winning a championship," said Hontiveros, putting more importance in helping Alaska bag the title.

As the Aces lost the game, 93-88, the feat gave him a consolation of sorts especially looking back on his 14 years in the league.

Asked whether he could still give chase to the top three shooters despite being in the twilight of his career, Hontiveros said he will do whatever he can.

"Gusto ko pa maglaro and if given a chance to play more years, I will do my best," he said. "I'm taking care of my body naman. Hopefully I'll  just keep on going." —JST, GMA News
