Hotshots catch fire, dismantle Dyip


The Magnolia Hotshots relied on their sweet shooting to defeat the Columbian Dyip, 126-101, on Wednesday in the elimination round of the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Hotshots came out firing in the opening period, burying the Dyip in a 37-18 hole in the first 12 minutes. Columbian never recovered, as Magnolia led by as many as 38 points at one point in the game.

Coach Chito Victolero’s squad pummeled their foes in the paint, connecting on 65 points while allowing just 36. Magnolia’s bench also edged Columbian’s, 56-37.

Magnolia’s starters were particularly on point, led by Vernon Macklin who had 19 points and eight boards. Mark Barroca and Paul Lee provided the one-two punch in the backcourt, tallying 17 points apiece while combining for 14 assists and four boards.

Jio Jalalon rounded up the starters in double figures with 11 markers and nine boards, while Ian Sangalang paced the bench with 18 points. Aldrech Ramos also had an efficient outing, hitting 12 as a reserve.

Columbian import John Fields led his squad with 22 points and 19 rebounds, as Jerramy King tallied 19 to lead the locals. Rashawn McCarthy, meanwhile, was limited to just 12 points off a 3 of 10 shooting clip.

With the win, Magnolia improved to 2-1, just behind league leaders Rain or Shine (4-1), and Alaska, Meralco, and TNT, meanwhile, remain knotted for second at 3-1. Columbian is now behind Magnolia at 3-3. — LA, GMA News
