Subido scores 18 as Tigers topple Tams

The UST Growling Tigers outlasted the FEU Tamaraws, ending a five-game losing stretch for a 76-74 win on Wednesday in the UAAP Men’s Basketball competition.

Renzo Subido led UST off the bench with 18 points, while Marvin Lee accounted for 13 as a starter. Joshua Marcos and Steve Akomo combined for 22.

The last time UST won against FEU was in 2015, when Kevin Ferrer led the Tigers to a 62-56 Game 2 win in the finals.

A 24-15 second quarter blast allowed UST to take a 39-32 lead at the half, but the Tigers had enough answers in the final frame to keep FEU at bay.

Prince Orizu made it a one-point game at the 2:14 mark, but Germy Mahinay’s putback in the subsequent play kept UST ahead, 74-71.

An Orizu offensive foul and a Cani miss led to a Ken Zamora basket with 19 seconds, letting UST stretch the lead to five with 19 seconds to go, but a quick three from Cani at the other end kept it interesting.

Marvin Lee then committed a turnover, allowing FEU a chance to tie the game or go for the win, but Arvin Tolentino missed a triple at the buzzer, giving UST the victory.

The Tams were limited to just three points in the final two minutes, letting UST escape with the victory.

Prince Orizu paced FEU with 25 points, as the rest of the starters combined for a paltry 7 of 28 from the field. Hubert Cani and Richard Escoto also added 15 and 13 points, respectively, off the bench. — BAP, GMA News
