Pelicans’ Davis: Agent change about being ‘dominant’

Yes, New Orleans Pelicans superstar Anthony Davis changed agents, but no, the timing has nothing to do with him being eligible next season for a five-year, super-max contract extension, he says.

And his new agent, Rich Paul, the founder of Klutch Sports Group, says it's not about Davis looking to get out of the Big Easy. Paul's client list includes Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James.

At the Pelicans' media day on Monday, Davis said the change "was for who I am right now in my career and what I'm trying to do. I thought the change was necessary. That's all it was. Just trying to be the most dominant player in the league. I think making that change to Klutch will help me do so."

The day before, when the change in representation was announced, Paul told ESPN that the switch doesn't mean Davis is looking to go elsewhere.

Davis did nothing to change that message on Monday.

"I'm here and I'm focused on winning with this squad right here and having a good squad," Davis said. "Just want to go out there and play my hardest."

Regardless of who is representing Davis, his maximum NBA contract is dictated by the NBA contract structure. Currently, a five-year, super-max contract extension would be worth about $230 million. — Field Level Media/Reuters
