Ateneo dominates UST, locks top spot in Final Four

Closing out their elimination campaign, the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles dominated the UST Growling Tigers, 102-62, Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Katipunan-based squad wrote the story for the entire game as they had a no "no-bearing" mentality, according to Ateneo assistant coach Sandy Arrespacochaga.

Ateneo dominated the second half, making 19 against UST's 20 during the fourth period, while they limited the España-based squad to 11 during the third period.

The Blue Eagles had the upper hand at the end of the first half, 58-31, despite UST coming close in the second period, making 18 against Ateneo's 24 points.

The blue and white team started hot, leading as much as 20 points past the halfway mark of the opening period, 22-2, to end the first frame at 34-13.

"We play as a team. Sinabi rin namin na finish the elimination strong para may momentum pagdating sa playoffs," Will Navarro said.

"We're happy that our mentality in this game wasn't a no-bearing game. We didn't see that from our players. Our players were serious and we wanted to see that our players were serious from the start because UST is a dangerous team," Arrespacochaga said.

The Ateneo assistant coach believes that all schools vying for the last Final Four sports are "dangerous."

"All schools are gonna be dangerous, all schools are tough match-up. We can't count out any school," he said.

Ateneo will enter its fifth straight Final Four appearance with 12 wins and two losses. UST will end its first season under head coach Aldin Ayo with five wins and nine losses, a big improvement from last season's dismal record of one win and 13 losses.
