Despite being diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), CJ Cansino believes his injury has a “purpose.”

In a talk with reporters after UST’s game against Ateneo Wednesday afternoon, the rookie sensation said having an injury is part of being an athlete.

“Tanggap ko naman na na-injury ako eh kasi part ng basketball. Nagiging positive lang ako kasi mahal ko talaga basketball eh.”

It was during their game against the UP Fighting Maroons that Cansino manifested signs of the injury. Early in the second quarter of that game, Cansino fell down and was ushered out to the dugout via stretcher.

Asked about what he feels right now, Cansino said he is just experiencing pain in the knee and nothing else.

He will undergo surgery on Monday for his ACL injury. He will then undergo therapy that will last from six to eight months. “Sasagarin ko na eight months para sure na malakas na talaga,” the rookie added.

Major injuries are not new for Cansino. He narrated he also had a groin injury when he was in high school.

Despite the injury, Cansino remains optimistic that he will overcome it, together with the help of his team.

“Tiningnan ko ‘yung timeline hanggang [kailan] ako makakabalik, parang may two months pa ako [before the next season]. Alam ko naman na tutulungan ako nina coach pagbalik ko,” Cansino said.

His fellow Tiger Renzo Subido also gave tips to the younger Cansino. “Sabi ko focus ka lang, think positive. When you get back, alagaan mo sarili mo. Make sure you make your body stronger talaga.”

Watching from the sidelines with a leg brace, Cansino said he regrets nothing with what happened. “Nagtitiwala ako kay God na lahat may purpose. Ok lang, laro lang ng basketball.” — BAP, GMA News
