Senate resolution seeks to commend Donaire for boxing win

Senator Pia Cayetano has filed a resolution commending Filipino boxing champion Nonito "The Flash" Donaire Jr. for defeating Mexican foe Fernando Montiel for bantamweight belts on Sunday (Manila time). Senate Resolution 391 seeks to commend Donaire for winning the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Organization bantamweight crowns after beating Montiel via technical knockout during the second round of their Las Vegas match. "The defeat is no ordinary one as Montiel is considered 'one of the best fighters in the world, a tested veteran who is rated No. 7 on The Ring’s Top 10 pound-for-pound list and had lost only two close decisions in his career'," said Cayetano. She said Donaire, 28, also showed "prowess" in his December 2010 fight against Ukrainian boxer Wladimir Sidorenko, which resulted in a technical knockout decision, giving the foreign boxer his first knockout loss in his career. Donaire joins eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao, WBO minimumweight champion Donnie Nietes and lady world champ Ana Julaton as current Filipino world titlists. "Donaire’s determination to win, coupled with hard work, discipline, and training, has secured for him his victories and should serve as inspiration and a shining example for the Filipinos, especially the youth," said Cayetano. - Kimberly Jane Tan/GMA News
