Pinoys Tubieron, Alolod dominate Japanese foes for regional WBC belts

A pair of rugged Filipino upstarts turned in the best performances of their young careers as Dennis Tubieron and Benezer Alolod scored dominant knockouts over Japanese challengers to win World Boxing Council (WBC) minor titles at the The Flash Grand Ballroom of the Elorde Sports Complex in Parañaque City on Saturday night. In the main event, Tubieron (14-1-1, 5 knockouts) of Puerto Princesa City used his smothering southpaw pressure to break down Hiroki Shiino (8-2, 7 KOs) of Tokyo, Japan, stopping him at the 2:31 mark of the eighth round to win the WBC International bantamweight title. Tubieron, 22, scored a total of four knockdowns of Shiino, 26, beginning in the fifth round when an exhausted Shiino collapsed in his corner from a left. Tubieron continued to pressure Shiino with body punches, leading to another knockdown in the seventh and two in the eighth that convinced referee Bruce McTavish to stop the contest. Shiino remained on the floor for several minutes as the paramedics administered oxygen to the severely fatigued fighter. Tubieron, who now trains and resides in Muntinlupa City, has won two straight since his only career defeat last November, when he lost to Lubabalo Msuthu in South Africa by split decision. Just before that, Alolod (11-4-3, 2 KOs) of General Santos City displayed his versatile punch arsenal, rocking back Ryu Onigashima (12-6, 7 KOs) of Yachiyo, Chiba, Japan with right uppercuts and left crosses from the southpaw stance. At 1:55 of the sixth round, Onigashima's corner mercifully stepped in and stopped the action despite the absence of a knockdown to win the vacant WBC Youth Intercontinental light flyweight title. "I didn't expect it to be this dominant because I know my opponent trains very hard," said Alolod, who represents the Brusmick Boxing Gym in Laguna. In a four round super flyweight bout, 17-year-old Lloyd Jardelisa (1-0-1, 1 KOs) of Mindoro and Felipe Cacogcob (0-0-1) of Parañaque battled to a majority draw. The scores were 39-37 for Jardelisa, while the other two scored it 38-38 even. The taller Jardelisa had trouble in the first round making use of his height and jab as the cagey Cacogcob boxed and countered effectively. Jardelisa turned the tide in round 2 with a right cross that stunned Cacogcob and left him tentative. Jardelisa appeared to get the better of the action but neither side disputed the decision. The event, which was promoted by Elorde International Productions, will be televised by GMA News 11 program "All Sports" at a later date. - AMD/OMG, GMA News Ryan Songalia is a member of the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) and contributes to GMA News.
